Leverage Empower Advance Research Network (LEARN)
Project Overview
The LEARN (Leverage Empower Advance Research Network) program is an exciting initiative, in partnership with the Jacobs Foundation, Universidad de los Andes, and the University of Cape Coast, designed to strengthen the research capabilities of early to mid-career scholars in Ghana and Colombia. Through innovative training, mentorship, and access to global and local networks, LEARN supports scholars to tackle challenges in child development and education. By fostering collaboration and capacity building, this fellowship positions scholars to lead impactful research and contribute to the global conversation on learning variability and developmental science.
-
Scholars from the majority world, including Ghana and Colombia, hold unique insights into child development and education. LEARN builds on these strengths by providing tailored resources, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration, amplifying local voices and enabling scholars to enhance their contributions. By connecting scholars with global networks and equipping them with advanced methodologies, LEARN positions them to continue to address local challenges while also enriching international discourse on developmental science.
-
LEARN is guided by four key objectives:
Strengthen Research Methods: Provide comprehensive training in advanced methodologies, including psychometrics, longitudinal research, and proposal writing.
Build Networks: Connect scholars with global research communities and local networks to foster collaboration and an exchange of ideas.
Enable Practical Application: Support scholars in applying their new skills, contributing to solutions for critical local and global challenges.
Create usable knowledge: LEARN has a dual focus on knowledge production: (1) Develop an approach and materials for capacity strengthening that can be adapted and applied beyond LEARN scholars, ensuring a broader impact. (2) Support LEARN scholars in the creation and dissemination of research that informs policy and practice.
-
LEARN takes a hands-on, inclusive approach to advancing research capacity, rooted in frameworks for adult learning and mutual capacity strengthening.
Key components of LEARN’s approach include:
Annual Methodological Workshops: These multi-day sessions focus on advanced research techniques such as psychometrics and longitudinal methods, combining experiential learning with inquiry-based instruction.
Monthly Seminars: Scholars participate in regular seminars to share progress, refine research questions, and collaborate with peers and mentors.
Mentorship: LEARN fosters relationship-centered models by pairing scholars with mentors who provide guidance on thematic areas and technical skills.
Networking Opportunities: Scholars connect with global research societies like ISSBD and SRCD, as well as local networks, in order to amplify their contributions to the global evidence base.
